Oscar de la Renta for Sophie

AdventuresSophie

SophieEscapadesThe Super Adventures of Sophie and the City is a series of children’s books written by Kelly Florio Kasouf and illustrated by Judit García-Talavera. Kelly Florio Kasouf is the daughter of late Condé Nast chief executive officer Steve Florio. She released the first adventure of Sophie last year – “All in a Day’s Work” – for which she harnessed her own childhood experiences with the fashion world. In the second book “Grand Central Escapades” released earlier this month, Sophie is on a time-traveling voyage to the Twenties, with appearances from Christian Dior, Paul Poiret and Marguerite Lanvin.

Both books are a great  Xmas gifts for fashionable little (or not so little) girls!

In early 2013, Oscar de la Renta will retail a special dress in his new children’s collection that was created for Sophie, to mirror both her sophistication and sense of whimsy and wonder. The cotton voile fabric mimics a watercolor iris, which complements the illustrations of the Sophie series.

“We were very excited to be able to make a special dress for Sophie, knowing that in a little Oscar de la Renta dress, she would shine the world over on her adventures through the greatest of all cities,” says Catherine Monteiro de Barros, VP of Design, Childrenswear.

Girls who are boys, who like boys to be girls…

You have to give it to Hedi Slimane. He likes to do things differently, with a certain edge to it. Changing the name of a fashion foundation like Yves Saint Laurent, creating a dark sombre summer collection and now opting for a girl for his men’s collection advertising campaign.

We already got used to Andrej Pejic acting as a female model and now we have the beautiful Saskia de Brauw modeling for Saint Laurent Men. I remember when Andrej first hit the catwalk during fashion week 2011, some fashion journalists were not very pleased with this turn in the modeling world. They found it very demeaning towards women. After fashion designers disturbing beauty standards by only working with size zero girls for years, they now opted for a zero woman to show women’s collections.

What do you think about the Saint Laurent campaign: does it work or not?

Woman of Style – Marion Cotillard

She is not just gorgeous looking, but also a very talented actress and singer with a her heart at the right place and both feet on the ground.

Marion Cotillard, born on September 30, 1975 in Paris, is best known for her Oscar-winning performance as Edith Piaff and being an ambassador of Christian Dior. But did you know that she is also a member of the French pop/rock band Yodelice (clip below)?

Marion grew up in a very artistic, creative surrounding and started acting at a very early age in her father’s plays. After theatre, she did some television work and in the mid 90’s she hit the silver screen (mainly in French movies). It was Tim Burton who casted her for her first English “Hollywood movie” for a supporting role in Big Fish. Her real break-through came with Edith Piaff and after that she started getting major roles in big block busters such as Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

The fashion world also started noticing Marion and her French effortless chic. She is a Dior ambassador since 2009 and wows everyone at each of her red carpet appearances.

Besides all the glamour of Hollywood, Marion is very grounded and prefers a simple life in Paris with her family. She is very interested in environmental activism and is an active spokesperson of Greenpeace.

Check her out on stage with Yodelice singing Velvet Goldmine.

Everybody loves Grace

It’s always been Grace. Only, we didn’t know it… until “The September Issue” showed that the real star at Vogue US is not Anna Wintour.

Grace Coddington offered a glimpse into her past during the documentary, but not enough, which is why “Grace: A Memoir” is such a welcome arrival. The book is a fascinating tale of a girl from Wales who grows from Vogue cover girl to the highly respected Vogue editor. Grace is fashion royalty, who’s been influencing the fashion world for many years silently behind the scenes. Now it’s time for Grace to tell her story!

Grace: A Memoir is available at Amazon.
