I’ve done a couple of “Woman of Style” posts and finally here is my first “Man of Style”. The one man who is on top of that list (for me at least) is TOM FORD. He like no one else understands what beauty and style is and can translate it to all of his creations.
Tom Ford was born in 1961 in Texas. Tom tried out many different schools and universities to finally end up at Parsons to study Interior Architecture after a successful modeling career in New York. During his final year, he did an internship and Chloe and discovered there his love for fashion. After graduating he stayed in the US for a couple of years working at Cathy Hardwick and Perry Ellis, but soon realised that if he wanted to become good designer he had to leave America.
At that time, there was a job opening at Gucci. Which might sound huge nowadays, but in 1990 the brand was at a very low. He started as the designer of menswear and shoes and in 1994 he was promoted to creative director. He put the glam back in Gucci and achieved the turnaround of the fashion house (increasing sales by 90%). It is Tom Ford and no one else who deserves all credit for putting Gucci back on the fashion radar. When the fashion house was bought by LVHM, he was also named creative director of YSL.
In 2004 he decided to leave Gucci, based on artistic differences. It was a hard break-up for Tom who had invested a lot into this fashion house. But, when one door closes…another one opens. And in 2005 he founded his own label, starting with beauty and menswear. It’s not until 2010 that he returns to womenswear, with a spectacular fashion show starring Beyonce, Lauren Hutton and close friend Julianne Moore. He once again showed that he is a perfectionist and great tailor, creating real clothes for real women. It’s all about the fit!
In 2005, he realised his dream by founding his own film production house and launching his first movie – A Single Man – in 2009. It is definitely one of the most beautiful cinematic movies I’ve seen. The film got a lot of positive reviews and received several Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Colin Firth and Julianne Moore deliver brilliant performances. According to Mr Ford: “Everything you need to know about me is in that movie”. And if you want to know more about this artistic talent, watch the documentary Visionaries.
