New must-have sunglasses

Lots of the new must-have sunglasses for this summer are real collectors’ items and statement pieces. Mainly because they are big and bold or have interesting frames. The cat-eye sunglasses from last year are still in popular demand, some of them with a more futuristic or extravagant twist. Last year we were all in search of the perfect statement necklace, I guess this year we will be making that fashion statement with sunglasses.

The iconic Levi’s 501

The 501 is celebrating its 140 years anniversary. The classic jeans of all jeans has unfortunately lost lots of its glory. I remember that in the late 80’s – beginning 90’s, you had to have a 501 or you were not cool. The term boyfriend jeans was not a fashion term yet, but we were all wearing them. There was no other jeans that had such a reputation. But they lost it along the way. A few year ago, Levi’s realised they lost their status with all these new hip brands and designer jeans taking their share of the market and they were back with advertising and branding campaign. But I don’t think they will ever regain the jeans throne they once had. Abercrombie & Fitch…. not so cool

It takes more to create a cool exclusive brand than a CEO who says so. A&F is learning that the hard way. CEO Mike Jeffries explained in an interview in 2006 that “We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.” 

And once things are on the internet, it’s out there for ever. These quotes have resurfaced again, but this time people are taking action and protesting against the retailer. It also inspired Greg Karber to create this viral campaign to help A&F a bit with a re-branding. Only after 2 days, the video reached over 3 million views:

Companies have to understand that a brand image is created by public perception and as a company you can steer it by communicating your brand identity through product design, advertising, stores…and interviews by your spokespeople. That didn’t end up that well for A&F. The company issued a statement today on Facebook saying that Mr Jeffries’ quotes were taken out of context and that he was misunderstood.

In my opinion, A&F tries to create an exclusive brand with not-so-exclusive clothes. But then again, it’s one of the few US retailers thus far who committed to signing the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh.

New Summer Scents 2013

With the arrival of spring, it’s also time to put aways those heavy winter scents and start using those more lighter fresh perfumes. Each year we welcome new summer editions of existing perfumes. These are the new “light” scents for this season:

Perfume_BalenciagaBalenciaga L’Eau Rose (main accord: rose)

The perfume, developed by perfumers Olivier Polge and Domitille Bertier,  retains the signature cool chypre character and violet domination which are now modified with new, youthful and luminous floral and fruity accords. The fragrance opens with blackberry leading to the heart of violet, rose and patchouli. The base contains cedar, cypress and musk.

Perfume_ValentinaValentino Valentina Acqua Floreale (main accord: floral)

This multi-layered floral composition is developed by perfumer Olivier Cresp. Initially, there are notes of bergamot and orange blossom that mingle with the heart of neroli, mimosa, tuberose and jasmine. The base is oriental, made of amber and patchouli.

Perfume_BottegaBottega Veneta Eau Légère (main accord: musky)

The composition is leathery – floral – chypre and it opens with refreshed dazzling top notes of the original which include bergamot and pink pepper. The scent retains its unique floral accord of jasmine, this time animated by delicate gardenia. Combination of oak moss and musk form a feminine and delicate trail.

Perfume_PradaPrada Candy L’Eau (main accord: balmy)

This playful and seductive perfume, created by Daniela Andrier, is modified with notes of citruses and flowers. Its opening sparkles with fresh Italian citruses, followed by the floral heart of sweet pea. The base is signature warm and gourmand, composed of benzoin, white musk and caramel.

The new edition Stella Summer 2013 offers luminous and cold notes of frozen lemon combined with foamy aromas of green apple. The heart develops aromas of rose surrounded with peony, resting on a warm, comfortable amber base.

Burberry Body Tender (main accord: fruity)

The words describing this new version of Body are tenderness, eternal youth, serenity, ease and charisma. The composition opens with fresh aromas of lemon, apple, peach and absinthe. The core of the composition includes essences of rose, tea leaves, jasmine and sandalwood, all placed at the base of cashmere accords, vanilla, musk and amber.
