Fashion Highlights 2012

Although I left Belgium 7 years ago, I am still proud of being Belgian and the footprint we have in the fashion industry. So here are my 10 (Belgian) fashion highlights of 2012:

THE top event for me in 2012, was when Dior confirmed that Raf Simons joined the fashion house. I watched his first couture show online and was truly amazed by the beauty of it. Another established designer, Dries Van Noten had again a successful year and received a lot of industry recognition for his collections. Although Martin Margiela is no longer active at Maison Martin Margiela, its guest designer collection for H&M included a lot of his signature pieces from the “early years”. Also the younger designers made themselves noticed on the fashion stage: Bruno Pieters launched his honest fashion platform and Christopher De Vos – part of the Peter Pilotto designer duo – was right on trend with the best print collection of the year. Other artists like Selah Sue and Matthias Schoennaerts also made their appearance. Selah Sue‘s beautiful song “Just because I do” was chosen by Yves Saint Laurent for their Manifesto perfume commercial. Matthias Schoenaerts, who made his introduction in Hollywood last year, starred in an amazing photo-shoot for US Vogue together with Carolyn Murphy. Last but not least, Belgian top model Cesar Casier wrote the cook book Model Kitchen and Laura Yumi Lambert will be the first Belgian model appearing in a Chanel ad shot by Karl Lagerfeld last year. Sounds like a good year to me!
And of course 2012 was also the year that saw the light.

Christmas Fantasy World by Dior

All big department stores are preparing their windows for Christmas and no effort is too big for this special time of the year.

Printemps in Paris really went the extra mile by collaborating with Christian Dior, who created an amazingly little fantasy world for the 11 windows of the department store. The ateliers of the fashion house created 74 dolls dressed in iconic Dior outfits especially for this occasion. Marion Cotillard, Dior Ambassador, was there to reveal the Xmas windows for the public earlier this week. Time to book your city trip to Paris, even if it is just to do some window shopping.

In the windows of London department store Harrods, you can admire the female Disney characters in beautiful princess gowns created by Versace, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino and many more. Check out the video below highlighting all the dresses.  Of course the Louboutin Cinderella shoe is also on display in London.

Anyone knows what is happening at Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC?

Simplicity is the only Sophistication

At the same time when all fashion royalty is in NYC for Fashion Week, all not-so-lucky-fashionistas have to do it with the tweets and pics from the front row seaters.

But on Friday, I was a lucky girl attending the fashion show of Mart Visser at the Miele Catwalk event 2012 in Utrecht/Netherlands. I didn’t know Mart Visser that well and was very happily surprised. The motto of his winter collection was the famous quote taken from DaVinci: Simplicity is the only Sophistication. And sophisticated it was! Mart Visser is a great tailor loving the female body with all her natural curves. And using the most beautiful materials, showing the finest leather and amazing fur creations. (But maybe next time he might want to consider fake fur instead of real fur!) Fashion talent is not only found in Paris, Milan or New York…
