Raf Simons – New art book by Taschen

One of the best designers of our time, Raf Simons, now captured in a beautiful new art book from Taschen. It will give you an insight in his impeccably tailored menswear line, how he reinvented Jil Sander, and created a new look since he took charge of Dior in 2012. The book includes 120 pages of photographs as well as essays, interviews and quotes from the designer himself. A must-have for all fashion lovers out there!

Raf vs Hedi

Paris Fashion Week is already a couple of weeks behind us, but the buzz over Raf Simons and Hedi Slimane is not over yet. Both designers showed their first RTW collection (SS2013) for their new “employers”: Christian Dior and Saint Lauren Paris.

Raf showed a very gracious modern collection, including colour and short dresses. The dark creations from Hedi dressed in smokings and long gowns were rather heavy and monotone. These 2 collection couldn’t have been more contrasting than black and white.

De media is loving everything Raf’s presents them with. Suzy Menkes and Vogue can’t find enough superlatives to describe the work of the designer. On the other side of town, Hedi has put the PR department of Saint Laurent Paris at work. Several fashion critics were not impressed by his collection, but it was Cathy Horyn from The New York Times who made the designer hit the roof. Hedi Slimane immediately started a cat-fight on Twitter putting the journalist’s credibility in question.

Signature pieces of the collection:

1 – 0 for Raf Simons if you ask me. Make that 2 – 0, based on that amazing couture show earlier this year. So proud to be Belgian!

Raf Simons’ first Dior show

Today was THE day! Raf Simons’ first collection for the House of Dior was shown to the public, which was also his first couture collection ever. And I was there. Well, not in Paris but following the live streaming.

The show was held in a private house in Paris and each room was covered from floor to ceiling in fresh flowers. Each room another flower, another color. It looked amazing and very promising for what was about to come!

The show started off with very simple, minimalistic pieces but then it was like the archives of Dior opened and entered the 21st century. I am so happy to see that Raf brought the House of Dior back to its core: grace, elegance, femininity.

For the first time, a fashion show was attended by many fellow designers. Icons like Pierre Cardin, Azzedine Alaïa, Alber Elbaz, Donatella Versace and Diane von Furstenberg were there for Raf’s debut. It’s clear that Raf is very loved and highly respected in the industry.

There were also some negative comments about this collection, mainly from the fans of Galliano. I don’t understand the people who don’t see Christian Dior in this collection. Go check the archives I would say. For me, Galliano was not Dior. You can decide for yourself  and watch the show on YouTube.

Raf Simons for Fred Perry

As if being creative director for Dior is not keeping him busy enough, Raf Simons will be collaborating with Fred Perry again. Raf created capsule collections for Fred Perry from 2008 till 2011. He will be designing polo’s, sweaters and jackets for the Men’s Spring Collection 2013.

“We are very excited to re-launch the collaboration with Fred Perry,” says Raf Simons. “We have great appreciation for the heritage of the brand as well as their dynamism in guiding the brand towards the future. Their openness to create synergies between both our brands will bring interesting, creative results.”

Raf Simons Artistic Director of Dior

It’s official: Raf Simons will be the new artistic director of Christian Dior.  “I feel fantastic,” Raf Simons said to the NYT. “It is one of the ultimate challenges, and a dream to go to a place like Dior, which stands for absolute elegance, incredible femininity and utter luxury.”

This doesn’t come as a surprise, but it is still an interesting move coming from the house of Dior. Raf’s style could not be more different from that of the founder. He has a modernist vision and a spare, linear style based on fine tailoring. His style and personality are also far away from the flamboyant, theatrical style from Galliano.

It will be very exciting when he brings his first collection to the runway! CONGRATULATIONS RAF.
